The Hill House, Helensburgh

Weathering the storm isn’t always easy! Especially with all the weather that the wild Atlantic can throw at you here in Scotland.

And that’s something the various owners of the Hill House in Helensburgh have found out, often to their cost. While Charles Rennie Mackintosh may have been a gifted and visionary designer, he wasn’t always the most practical of people, and over the years the Hill House began to suffer as damp seeped into the bones of his creation.

Over the past few years work had been undertaken to restore the building, and that has had an unexpectedly positive outcome: the Box. An ingenious covering over the Hill House, designed to allow the drying out of its walls. To everyone’s surprise, it’s a creation that has become a wonderful visitor attraction in its own right.

It won’t be there forever, so a visit before it goes is well worth it. More about the Hill House and the Box in my article in iScot Magazine, issue 122
